In an attempt to make up for this, a separate Mic Mode is available from the main menu, where all five games can be played in any order. Unfortunately, there are only five of them.

Since the voice-recognition software (programmed by ScanSoft, whose software was also used in LifeLine) works very well, the games are great fun. What spices up the action are the mini games – brief, action-oriented contests that pit players against each other for prizes. Players choose their character from a dozen Mario favorites, then roll dice to move around the board, trying to land on beneficial spaces.

Since its first installment in 1998, the Mario Party series has been a perennial success for Nintendo and developer Hudson Soft, featuring a blend of board-game action for up to four players. But the paucity of microphone-enabled mini games and the lack of new content can kill the party mood quickly. For people who haven't played any of the games in the series before, the action can be novel and fun for those who have, the latest tweaks and upgrades make Mario Party 6 a solid sequel. The device lets players compete using only the sound of their voices. The novelty is that some of the action is driven by the GameCube Mic controller, which comes bundled with the game. The idea is to roll dice and move characters around the board to win prizes. This is at heart a board game meant to be played with friends. Not so with Mario Party 6, the latest in Nintendo's series of video board games. Screaming and yelling is usually a part of playing video games with friends, but rarely does it directly affect the onscreen action.
